Several months ago, as students around me began to talk about what they were “going to do this summer,” I started to think about how I wanted to spend my three glorious months of freedom. “Well,” I thought, “I could take classes and get some general education credits out of the way… or I could work at the local pizza place like I did last summer.” Somehow, those options didn’t sound too satisfying. I wanted to do something that would stretch and build my faith. I felt God placing a burden on my heart to do something that could help develop the spiritual foundation of my life and prepare me for a lifetime of serving Christ.
God has graciously provided me a unique opportunity to join 100 other students from across the Midwest for a spiritual development program sponsored by The Navigators, an international ministry organization dedicated to serving Christ. We'll be located at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.
Much of my growth will happen in a team setting: four students will be assigned to a Navigator team leader. We will live, work, attend church, and study the Bible together. We will also have the opportunity to live and work alongside people in the community and on the campus of UNF. All summer I will be rubbing shoulders with those who don’t know Christ in Jacksonville and learning how to impact them for Christ. This will give me a unique opportunity to have a “missions experience” in the context of this training program. I believe this experience will prove invaluable to me as I return for my junior year living in Marlatt Hall. I hope to be better equipped in the fall semester to reflect the light of Christ to my fellow students.
I am telling you about this, because I’d like to ask you to consider partnering with me in prayer and finances. What the program will provide for me in personal and ministry development, it will not provide in finances. I will be a summer intern with The Navigators, and am required to raise funds to participate in this program to cover some of my expenses, the training program fee, room and board, and also some additional money so that I can keep working my way through college.
I am asking God to surround me with a team of people who will each pray for me and financially contribute anywhere from $25 to $500. My goal is to raise $4,000 for this training program. Would you prayerfully consider being part of my support team for this summer? I would be deeply grateful. Thank you for considering this. I look forward to hearing from you.
P.S. As the Lord leads you, please send your gift (payable to The Navigators) with the enclosed card by April 30th. I plan to arrive at Jacksonville by May 26. Thank you!
(NOTE: Remember to include the Navigator logo, your first and last name, address, phone, and e-mail.)
Optional Beginnings to Your Fundraising Letter
Dear Family and Friends,
It is hard to believe that yet another year has flown by, and I am finishing up the last month of my sophomore year at the University of _____________________. This has been a different year for me with the addition of a music minor to my Spanish major. I have been even busier this year than last (a challenging feat!) but have truly enjoyed the change of pace.
When I am not in the music building, library, dining center, or my bed, I am involved in the lives of other students or at a Navigator (a Christian ministry on campus) event. My involvement with them as a student leader this year has been challenging but extremely rewarding. I am in a leadership Bible study with six amazing students, and also have the opportunity to lead a Bible study with five freshmen and sophomores. We have learned, discussed, prayed, laughed, and cried our way through this year, loving every minute of it. It is truly amazing to see how God has transformed each one of us throughout the year, and how the love of Christ bonds people of such different backgrounds together! God has really given me a burden to be used by Him to impact this campus for His Kingdom. It has been a great year, but I am definitely getting ready for the summer.
This summer the Lord has provided me with an exciting opportunity to grow spiritually and to share His love with others…
I have a financial request for you to consider. But first, let me tell you about last Thursday night. Around 8:15 p.m., as I was walking home from the library in the snow with my friend Bill, he asked me, “So what are you going to do this summer?” I gulped. Then I said to him, “I am going to Florida to work in a program sponsored by The Navigators where we are going to learn more about serving Jesus.” I thought that he would laugh. But he didn’t. We stopped at Murphy’s for a Coke, and I told him more about my summer plans. He thought it sounded pretty great. He also asked me some more questions about my faith.
It’s partly because of that I want to go to Florida this summer. Let me explain a little more.
