“I think God is a force, not a person,” Daniel responded to my question. Matt, a Navigator student leader, and I were sitting outside of Cary Quad the first week of classes. Matt met Daniel through the spiritual survey he filled out during freshman orientation. I asked him, “Is it possible for God to be a person?” He replied, “Well, I’ve never thought about that. I guess God could be a person.” We engaged spiritual truths for the next hour, and at the end of our conversation about Jesus, we could see God at work in Daniel’s heart. “Maybe God sent Jesus to show us what he’s like.” Matt and I couldn’t believe our ears. Daniel had moved from saying God is a force to God is a person, maybe even Jesus. “Daniel, would you be open to investigating the Bible to see what we can learn about the person of Jesus and what he wants of us?” I asked. “That’d be cool,” he answered.
For the past eight weeks, we’ve been reading the Gospel of John and learning together about who Jesus is and how we are to respond to him. Matt and I are trusting God to use His Word to bring Daniel to faith in Christ. “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; it is these that testify about Me…” (John 5:39). Our conversations are full of laughter, questions, and even Daniel quotingSouth Park episodes. He’s still far from God, but he comes back each week ready to read and learn about God.
In a recent meeting, we discussed Christ’s death on the cross and the spiritual suffering Jesus endured in being separated from God as a payment for our sin. As I drew out illustrations on sin, the cross, and entering into a relationship with Christ, Daniel began to grasp why Jesus died on the cross. “This helps a lot. I have never seen this before, and now I understand what Christ did.” Please pray for conviction of sin in Daniel’s life and for him to turn to and trust in Christ!
Matt told me it has been amazing to see the power of God’s Word in Daniel’s life. Matt was so excited about reading the Bible with a non-Christian that he is now investigating the Bible with a Chinese student who lives in his dorm!
Because of your generosity, we are able to invest our lives and the Gospel in students like Matt and Daniel. We praise God for your investment in God’s work here. We couldn’t do it without you!
